Costa Mesa’s Misty May Treanor cemented her place in beach volleyball history on Sunday winning her 100th event in Chicago.
May-Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh beat number two seeds Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh 18-21, 21-17, 15-12 to win the AVP Crocs Tour Chicago Open.
The first woman and only the fifth player in the sport’s history to reach 100 career tournament victories, May-Treanor took the victory pretty much the way the way she takes all of them.
“I didn’t really think about the record,” May-Treanor said after. “I guess I knew it was 100. But it’s a team sport, so I look more at the team success. The individual stuff is great, but I would never have gotten here if it wasn’t for (former partner) Holly (McPeak) and Kerri.”
The victory was also the 16th in a row for the duo, headed with a lot of momentum going in to the Olympics. And winning the final was also the 90th consecutive match the team has one, breaking their record from 2003-2004.
May-Treanor is racing up quickly behind the game’s greatest player, Karch Kiraly, who took 180 events to reach 100 victories. She needed only 153, which is almost two seasons ahead of Kiraly’s pace.
Dwarfed by the achievement, the top men’s team in the world, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers beat Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal for the men’s title. Both U.S. teams are headed for the Beijing as well.
