The men’s team of Stein Metzger and Mark Williams got their first victory on Sunday at the AVP Crocs Slam Boulder.
While the top men’s teams were away in Europe vying for Olympic spots, Metzger (whose regular partner, Mike Lambert, is still winding his way back from injury) and Williams, the transplanted Australian, the number three seeds in Colorado, topped number 5 seeds Anthony Medal/ Fred Souza 21-17, 21-15.
The victory was the 18th for Metzger and first for Williams. It was the second finals appearance for Medal and Souza.
“This will definitely be one I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Williams said. “Playing a match on NBC with all the cameras on you, it’s a great chance to prove to yourself you can do it.”
Metzger was as happy for his temporary partner as he was for himself.
“It’s always special to be a part of someone else’s first win,” said Metzger. “Mark and I had finally made a commitment to play together for the rest of the season and the first tournament after that, we win. We got them right off the bat, and just stuck with it and it worked,” said Metzger.
