Locals Strook and McCrystal beat trend at Nike Pier Pressure

June 29th, 2008, 5:03 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Shawn Price

Huntington Beach locals were the only survivors of an otherwise brutal day for OC surfers at the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure.

Logan Strook and Quinn McCrystal pushed through tough Round of 48 heats to reach Monday’s final day of the event. Strook won a stacked head in 3-5 foot choppy conditions over Hawaii’s Tyler Newton 12.35-10.75. Dane Zaun and Riley Metcalf finished third and fourth respectively.

McCrystal advanced behind Hunter Heverly 14.75-12.15. Mike McCabe and Ben Graeff finished third and fourth. McCrystal had an easier time in his previous heat in the Round of 64, getting one of the top heat scores of the day.

Locals getting eliminated on Sunday included San Clemente’s Metcalf, Huntington Beach’s Jason Harris, Bruno Rodrigues and Kyle Kennelly and Ford Archbold of San clemente.

In Monday’s Round of 32 match ups, Strook will face Adam Wickwire, Brent Reilly and Kai Barger, and McCrystal faces Stuart Kennedy, Kellen Ellison, and Austin Smith-Ford. In other heats, Andrew Doheny faces Luke Davis, Evan Geiselman vs. Cody Thompson, Eric Geiselman vs. Blake Jones, Cory Arrambide vs. Dusty Payne, and Nat young vs. Trevor Saunders.
