There’s a ton of stuff to do with dad going on along the coast this weekend, so check out these events if you want to head down to the coast. If you have an event you want to get the word out on, check our free online listings calendar.

PIER SWIM:

Show your kid you can still swim faster than them during the annual “Rough Water” pier swim.

The swim – now in its 58th year – starts at 8:45 a.m. for the first group, ages beachwatch061403.jpg16 through 31. Various groups start afterward.

Trophies will be awarded after the races. Last year, nearly 400 people showed up for the swim. Lifeguards are on hand to help people if they get tired during the swim.

Registration starts at 8 a.m., cost is $15 without a shirt. The time to beat this year: 8 minutes, 17 seconds. Keith Ryan broke the previous record – which stood for 20 years – with that time.

CHILI COOKOFF

If you’re going to be in the pier swim, you’ll definitely be working up an appetite. Head over to Main Street in Huntington for a “Chili at the Beach” event, which will be held all weekend starting at 11 a.m.

It’s free to attend the event, but will cost $10 to sample the chili. A portion of the proceeds will go to Children’s Hospital of Orange. Main Street will be closed to traffic.

The party kicks off at 8 a.m. with the Dewey Weber Longboard Classic surf contest. Proceeds go to help fix up the Doheny State Beach Interpretative Association and Aquarium, which is currently shut down because of mold problems.

“It breaks my heart we don’t have that building open any more,” said State Ranger Jim Serpa. More than 1 million people have visited the building in the past 20 years. .

The event runs until 5 p.m. and is free to the public, with live music from three bands, Hawaiian dancers, a vintage Woodie car show, a vintage surfboard exhibit, and a Hobie Cat display. More than 40 vendors are expected to display surf merchandise such as clothes, artwork and photos. Prizes include a classic wooden surfboard, a week’s worth of surf lessons from Girl in the Curl and gift cards.

Also, the real Gidget, Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman, will be there to sign books.

“We’ll celebrate surfing heritage, surf industry, surf history,” Serpa said. “It’s fun down there, you’ll be able to listen to music, it will be great atmosphere.”
