The Red Bull Riders Cup Championship is this weekend and yes, an Orange County high school will have a hand in it again. But this is not the NSSA.
No six-man heats. No Hawaiian shadow lurking over the proceedings. The usually battle lines have changed and Brad Gerlach’s dream of changing the status quo in surfing is coming true. The teams love playing “The Game.” And this weekend will be truely national. Eh, except for Hawaii. But that’s their problem.
And this is competitive. No team has yet to repeat. No team has yet to dominate. Carlsbad High School beat defending champ San Dieguito Academy May 30. The best eight teams in the country, based on the previous two months of the tournament, will try to advance Saturday in the quarterfinals at Trail 6 at San Onofre State Park.
The teams and schedule are as follows:
Regional champions:
Soquel High (Santa Cruz)
Jupiter High (South Florida)
Satellite High (Central Florida)
Carpinteria High (Ventura)
Ocean City High (New Jersey)
Mira Costa High (South Bay)
