The early success of the USA Surf Team in France probably has them shouting “Vive le beach break!”
Each squad has so far performed almost exactly as expected in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships and the team still has its mind on gold.
Of the 12 opening heats in the Boys Under 18, Boys Under 16 and Girls Under 18 divisions, the U.S. was 11-1, with Luke Davis finishing second, but still advancing behind Tahiti’s Tamaroa McComb.
The girls squad lived up to expectations surfing solidly with Courtney Conlogue and Sage Erickson trouncing their competitors. The boys under 18 squad of Dillon Perillo, Dane Zaun, Nat Young and Chase Wilson also solidly won their opening heats.
The boys under 16 squad of Kolohe Andino, Connor Coffin, Andrew Doheny and Davis were strong in the opening heats, but Davis fell prey to a hard charging McComb.
In round 2 of the Boys Under 18 division, the U.S. slowed a bit. While Perillo and and Young won their heats, Zaun finished second, but advanced and Wilson finished third and was knocked into the repercharge heats. If Wilson can finish first or second in those heats, the team can continue to do well, but if Wilson is eliminated early, U.S. chances for gold would be slim.
