Hawaiian World Championship Tour star, younger brother of three-time world champ Andy Irons and Surfer Poll favorite Bruce Irons will retire from competitive surfer at the end of this season, Volcom announced Thursday.
The statement came in conjunction with a Surfing Magazine interview this month and seemed to leave little doubt that Irons’ heart, despite reaching the world tour and being one of only a handful of surfers to ever win the In Memory of Eddie Aikau contest, was really not into it.
“I’m going back to being a freesurfer,” Bruce tells Surfing editor Evan Slater. “It’s what I was meant to do. I prefer to go back to how I started my whole surfing trip, which is to go on surf trips and make videos.”
In the statement, his sponsor, Volcom, said they were “100% supportive in Bruce’s decision and we’re looking forward to the next step in his career.”
