Even though the official start to the summer season isn’t until next weekend, beaches were crazy busy with crowds because of the heat wave - keeping lifeguards on their toes with rescues.
Just got a text message from lifeguard Ryan Gates over at Bolsa Chica State Beach reporting 151 rescues during the weekend, and 184 over at Huntington State Beach. There were no major rescues, or nothing out of the ordinary.
“It was non-stop for about five hours today,” he wrote.
I suggested he grab a beer - after his shift ends, of course.
I was in Newport Saturday, and it took forever to find parking on the Peninsula for the annual Dodgeball on the Beach event. It was even worse in Huntington (had to cover the duck-a-thon), where I circled the streets for about 30 minutes before I found a spot.
Can’t wait ’till next weekend…
