Shane Beschen and Richie Collins kicked off the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro Tuesday with victories in the small, but clean two-to-three foot conditions.

San Clemente’s Beschen knows Lowers better than almost any pro surfer alive and he surfed like it. The four-time event champ beat Santa Cruz’s Jason Collins 14.33-13.00

“I’m just going out and having fun and want to keep making heats,” Beschen said.  ”It looks like some swell is on the forecast too, and I’m looking forward to a good event.”

Another former OC world tour star, Richie Collins finished with a 11.50-7.30 victory over Japan’s Daisuke Suzuki in the Round of 192 and advanced behind Hawaii’s Kiron Jabour in the Round of 160.

The event continues 8 a.m. Wednesday and runs through Saturday. Surfers still to compete are Chris Ward, Nate Yeomans, Brett Simpson, Patrick, Dane and Tanner Gudauskas, Taylor Knox, Cory and Shea Lopez, and Carissa Moore.
