First racers reach Ensenada finish line

Winds got up to 15 knots at the start of the race, but came to a quick stop at about 8 p.m., Magnitude 80’s navigator Ernie Richau said in a press release. The boat was only 25 miles to the end, and didn’t reach the finish line until 4:25 a.m.

“That’s about 9 hours to go 25 miles. Pretty slow going,” he said.

That  means Roy Disney’s Pyewacket keeps the record at 10 hours, 44 minutes and 54 seconds, set in 2003. Disney has since retired from sailboat racing, and was not in this year’s competition.

Doug Baker’s Magnitude 80 out of Long Beach held the record briefly in 2002, but it looks like they’ll have to wait another year to reclaim the record. The boat was, however, first to reach the finish line.

Several of the other big boats came through about two hours later.
