It’s time for some spring cleaning.cleanup1.jpg
Get those gloves out, grab a bag, and head down to the coast to do your part during this year’s Earth Day celebration.
Earth Day isn’t officially until next Tuesday, but there are plenty of groups getting together to start giving Mother Earth some love this weekend.

Plus, it’s a good excuse to go to the beach.
We’ve got the usual beach clean ups, along with activities such as tree plantings and free surf lessons.
Here’s some spots to help out at on Saturday:

Doheny State Beach:
Help plant native trees in the north day use area, and clean the creeks and shoreline. Bring a shovel if you have one. Digging starts at 9 a.m. More info; Vicki at vwiker@parks.ca.gov or visit www.dohenystatebeach.org/

South Orange County Surfrider:
Celebrate International Year of the Reef at the Ocean Institute at the Dana Point Harbor. There will be educational booths from Surfrider Foundation, Reef Check and the Pacific Marine Mammal Center. Come by from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you want to get your hands dirty, come  by Salt Creek for a clean up from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
More info:  www.ocean-institute.org/html/weekendprogram_scouts.htm or www.surfrider.org/southorangecounty/
San Clemente
Head down to Parque del Mar, which overlooks the beach and San Clemente Pier, from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. for live entertainment, demonstrations and children’s activities. More info: info@scwatersheds.com or (949) 366-2326.

Crystal Cove State Park:

Come down to Pelican Point to help pull weeds, remove an old rusty fence along the coastal bluff and of course, clean the beach. Wear boots, long pants and work gloves. Bring a lunch and enjoy at the group picnic site at the park. Meet at parking area #4, contact wbonnin@parks.ca.gov.
SUNDAY:

Seal Beach Pier:
Join the first “Ohana Day” put on by Surfrider. There will be a coast guard helicopter drop, skateboard and BMX demos and free surf lessons. More info: www.sbhbsurfrider.

Upper Newport Bay Earth Day
Come by the Upper Newport Bay from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to check out science booths, environmental exhibits, live music and a scavenger hunt for all ages. Meet at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center, 2301 University Drive.

Bolsa Chica
Meet at the Bolsa Chica North Parking lot starting at 9 a.m. to help with planting and
watering native plants, guided by the Bolsa Chica Stewards. Wear  closed-toed shoes, sun protection, and gloves. Info: (714) 840-1575
