I was in one of those funky moods on Monday night, so I shot down to the beach to get out of the house and for some fresh air.
It’s been so long since I’ve done that – gone to the beach for no reason at all other than to sit and enjoy the sunset.
When I lived up in the South Bay years ago, I’d make it a point to do just that at least once a week. These days, I’m too caught up in work and always looking for that next story to take the time out to just soak it all in.
So I got to Newport Beach north of the pier just in time to see this – an amazing, glowing sunset – and I couldn’t help but share it with you. A fishing boat cruised by just as the sun was sinking into the ocean, and birds gliding above the water’s surface put a finishing touch to the picture- perfect scene.
Despite the springtime chill that has yet to cease, there were tons of people who came out with the same purpose – a father with his two young children, a family with dogs splashing in ankle-deep water, surfers drying off after just getting out of the freezing water.
A group of giddy teens stopped me and asked that I take a photo of them, with the sunset to their backs.
“You are a very nice person,” one of the boys said. “I hope someone does something nice for you today.”
How very sweet of him to say.
Um, this is far too mushy and sentimental – so I have to add that I then went up the street to the District Lounge, took a shot which has a name I cannot repeat without washing my mouth out with soap, and got my butt smoked during the District’s Monday night pool tournament.
So next week – stop by to enjoy the sunset in Newport, and don’t forget to bring $10 for a few games!
