The Katin Team Challenge is back. The classic surf contest has been resurrected and will return to the water for the first time in a decade.

slated for January 14-18, 2009 at the Huntington Beach Pier, the contest will feature 24 teams of four surfers going head to head in open draw heats and results will be determined by each surfer’s finish.

This blast from the past was started in 1977 and ran to 1989, then returned in 1992 for another run through 1999. Past champs included Kelly Slater, Sunny Garcia, Shaun Tomson, Tom Curren and Martin Potter. But the contest also featured young surfers (at the time) like Rob Machado, Shane Beschen and Pat O’Connell.
