Gray whale sightings hitting 10 a day

graywhale2.jpgWhale watching charters are reporting a steady stream of gray whales off the coast, about 10 sightings each day.
Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching manager Donna Kalez said the whales have finally arrived — a bit later than normal because many of the migrating whales were hanging out in Cabo (wouldn’t you?)
The numbers of gray whales down there were so abundant that boats were having trouble getting around the waters, she said.
The gray whales – which have the longest migration of any mammal on Earth – are now headed northbound to Alaska after spending a few months in warm Mexican waters.
Also, Alisa Schulman-Janiger of the Gray Whale Census reported a rare group of transient killer whales – usually seen off Monterey Bay — about a week ago at Point Vicente. A male – which has a damaged dorsal fin - is usually seen hanging out with four companions, but whale watching boats that went out to see the killer whales said there were up to 12 of them.
The census group reported 28 sightings of northbound whales yesterday.

Davey’s Locker in Newport is reporting about four sightings per average each day.

About a week ago, Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari reported and shot photos of a young gray whale that got lost in the harbor for a bit, coming close to kayakers and a paddleboarder. I’d be freaking out — but I guess the worst gray whales could do is gum me to death. Check out that story here.
