Ask the expert: How much is a vintage bolsawood board worth?

Q. I am a 33-year-old father of two boys, 4 and 2. I’m a former high school and college athlete. I quickly realized that doesn’t mean I’m going to be able to surf right away.  I want surfing to be an activity I can do with my boys.  My question is this:  What advice can you give me to become a confident surfer myself?  I’ve taken a lesson and I guess I need to go as often as I can.  I’m a little hesitant to go where there is a big line-up, since I don’t want to screw that up.  I love being in the water and I see surfing as a great way to spend time with my boys.  Thanks for your advice.
A.  The lesson was a good idea, maybe more would be even a better idea.  Also you are right about going often.  Surfing takes a long time to master and the more you go, the better you get.  Thus, more confidence.  It is a great thing to do with your kids.  You are also right about sticking to beaches that are more user-friendly to beginners.  Good luck.

Q.  How much is a Hobie 1958-59 bolsawood board worth? It has been re-glassed and is in fine condition. India ink stamp on tail.  Thanks

A.  A lot.  It would have been more if not re-glassed.  Original is always worth more.  But none the less. you have a very valuable surfboard there, well into the thousands of dollars.   Best bet is to check with Allan Seymour in Capistrano Beach.  Good luck.

Q.  Do you know where I can find copies of the vintage surf films “Pacific Vibrations” and “Five Summer Stories?”

A.  Pacific Vibrations is only available as a bootleg copy and the best bet for that would probably be EBay.   Five Summer Stories is in surf shops. Good luck
