I can go on for ever about this. Especially after seeing the digital text the Toll has on the 5FWY has in Irvine. It questions if you want to relieve traffic and tells you to go to a site to relieve traffic. It was all about expanding the toll roads and claiming would cause no harm.

As a wildlife photographer I am totally against the 241. It won't only hurt the trestles. It will hurt wildlife further inland. We already have badgers, cougars, many endangered and threatened species being run over on the Ortega HWY. I've seen a deer killed on the 241 already. Road kills of cougars/mountain lions is the leading cause of their deaths. With expansion will just see increase in number of people damaging their cars hitting wild animals and the loss of animals as well.

It is also just common sense that it will just make traffic worst. It will bring more people to San Diego. People who travel from where the 9` and 15 meet will often change their route from using the 15 south to get to San Diego to taking the 241. We will hear a promise no commercial land will be built along the expansion. Same promise was given when Antonio PKWY was expanded to the Ortega HWY. Now Antonio PKWY has about three new cities. It is just like will people ever learn?

I used to use the 241. My credit card on the account has expired and I do not intend to update my account with the Toll. Would be nice to see a lot get together and hold signs at entrances hoping to show an idea of what can happen.

Hope the rest of you stop or at least reduce your use of the toll roads. Every time you use it is more money and power for them. Please wake up 15 minutes earlier to show your support to stop expansion of the 241.

Sighburrdood,

You said- "I had some fun holding up the Surfrider “Save the beach, Stop the tollroad” brochure, folding it so that it actually read “Save the tollroad”, LOL. THAT got some dirty scowls from the Anti crowd."

That's pretty funny... very clever. I didn't catch that. I don't know if I could laugh as much if the outcome was different, but I can definitely appreciate the humor now! You're just as much of a smart ask punk (meant in the most endearing way) as many of us surfers are..... just for a different cause. Believe it or not, I can actually appreciate that.

I'm done blogging... it's been fun and a good learning experience, but thanks anyway for the invite.

Take care dood.... best wishes to you and yours!

Sighburrdood,

Sorry to hear you didn't stick around. Watching Margro get absolutely slaughtered by a commissioner was the highlight of my night..... outside of the final vote of course. It was actually a nail-biter for a while..... but after a good amount of deliberation and debate, the final 8-2 vote was a big nail in the 241 coffin.

Glad you recognized that the pro-forces were outnumbered... but I'd say 4-1 is a little conservative.... and I'd venture to say that 99..8% of the opponents were not paid to be there. The same can not be said for the proponents. A dirty little rumor has it that some of the laborers there were actually pulled off the street (yes, the undocumented Home Depot day laborer type- NOT union laborers) and paid to be there. I call it a rumor as I do not know this as a fact first hand, but it comes from a source I personally hold in high regards as far as ethics are concerned. No big deal though... as it obviously didn't sway the outcome.

You didn't come introduce yourself..... Was it because I looked like a dumb scum bag surfer not worthy of an intelligent conversation...? Was it because you didn't like my shirt....?? I'm sure it was a hit with the TCA contingent....LOL!!!

Going forward, I hope the issue of congestion is addressed in a way that makes sense. To state that "tree hugging surfers" wish for traffic congestion to magically disappear is preposterous... I personally want everyone to spend less time on the road and more time with their loved ones... but any plan going forward will hopefully make a hell of a lot more sense than this one did.

So.... enough of the debating, verbal jabs, and "protagonistic" dialog from me. No hard feelings on my part... and I hope you don't have any either. I recommend you come on down to Trestles or San O.... bring the family and enjoy the unique experience that I am so passionate about. These beaches are by no means meant to be exclusively enjoyed by those who surf or live in the area..... we just happen to be a little more clued in to the beauty and tranquility that this stretch of coast has to offer. The only thing the "locals" ask is that you keep our (yes, yours and mine alike) beaches clean!

Mark Cole- Great job getting up there and laying it all out!!!

George (mayor of Main St.), Ghandi, and all the other good people I met - Good chatting with you and I'll see you in the water!!!!

Robby asked: "To those who went, how’d the hearing go?"

It was a long, grueling, tiresome experience, with highs and lows for both sides. It was supposed to begin at 9, but our portion ( 241 discussion.) didn't start until after 11am.

The anti-tollroad forces outnumbered the pro forces by AT LEAST 4 to 1, and did their utmost to be intimidating and obnoxious, but with their superior numbers that wasn't difficult to do.

A personal observation is that about 50% of the anti forces was less than voting age, and I doubt if 25% of them have even been driving for more than a year or two. That is a shame, because that - driving - is a bigger issue in this cause, than surfing.

The chantings of the anti forces rhetoric was disguised as a "save the pocket mouse, save the Indian burial grounds, save the surfing experience", but was quite obviously a case of "we don't want more people coming from inland to further congest our beach."

By the time I left, 5pm, they hadn't even gotten to the individual speakers, which was my reason for going. I left because in my humble opinion, the overall tone, including the comments by the commissioners, was of an anti-tollroad nature.

I will be SHOCKED if the commission approves the tollroad, which to me is a shame. I they disapprove it, that will likely result in counter-moves by the TCA, AND some portion of the Government, whether state or federal - meaning a lengthy appeal process.

Whether that eventually results in another route being selected remains to be seen. As I stated a couple of posts above, widening I-5 is definitely NOT a feasible alternative - THERE'S NO MONEY FOR THAT!!

The traffic congestion isn't going to magically disappear just because a well organized bunch of surfer/tree-huggers wish for it to. This is California, dudes - more people are STILL coming, every year, and that, my friends, is NOT going to change.

To be continued..............

Charmaine, the self-imposed spelling deputy of this blog, had this to say to me: "Sighburdood -I’ll tell you what’s embarrassing: a guy who chastises another over his supposed ignorance of both sides of the issue while he himself can’t even spell. "

Perhaps you could enlighten me as to my apparent violation. Not all of us compose a post elsewhere, with the help of a spell-checker, to be then cut & pasted. Please excuse me if a typo or a mispelling has offended your obviously superior intellect.

As for your post about Calif. finding alternatives to the 241, that put more people into less cars, apparently you're not a resident of California. If you were, you'd know that Californians - even tree-huggers, reject any forms of mass transportation.

This blog has seen posts suggesting loops, trains, ending the tollroad at Pico - that one should get the biggest laugh, unless you've never driven on Pico, from the freeway - and double-decking or widening the 5.

The problem with widening the 5, is the narrowing it presently takes through the middle of downtown San Clemente. It would entail massive condemnation of present structures that happen to be in the way. It would ALSO take $3-5 billion dollars, which the state has no way of coming up with - not in this decade, anyway.

In addition, even if the state did have the money for it, it would be a logistical nightmare of even further clogged traffic for a few years while the project was completed. Building of the tollroad would have no effect on the 5, until it's finished, at which time it would reduce traffic on the 5 - through San Clemente, San Juan, and Mission Viejo - by about 15-20%.

Were you at the meeting today? SAVE the tollroad!
