Headless goats and chickens found on the sand in Laguna Beach

November 13th, 2007, 4:05 pm · 14 Comments · posted by Laylan Connelly, staff writer

Another decapitated animal was found on the beach in Laguna this morning, the latest in a series of headless carcasses reported on the sand in the past week.

“Today’s was a rooster,” said Laguna Beach police Sgt. Jason Kravetz. “We just don’t know what this is.”

The strange findings started at 2 p.m. last Thursday, when a passerby reported a decapitated goat in a bag at Picnic Beach at One of the goats found in a bag. Two lifeguards were sent to the scene, where they found a 30-pound goat’s body in a black plastic bag.

There were also two decapitated chickens on the same beach, not in bags.

Later that day about 4 p.m., another call came into the lifeguard headquarters with a similar report – another goat body sans the head found at the bottom of a stairway at Sleepy Hallow, about a mile south of the original report. There was also another chicken at the Sleepy Hallow location.

“In this town, as far as dead animals go, it’s definitely the strangest thing I’ve come across,” Bond said. “I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s crazy.”

Today’s incident came from a citizen call at 9 a.m. reporting the discovery of the headless rooster, Kravetz said.

“It does not look like the deaths took place at the scene, it looks like they are either placed there or washed up,” he said.  ”Today’s was the weird one, because it showed up out of the blue.”
The carcasses are being kept at the animal shelter in a freezer. The two goats were in bags, described as mesh, purple onion bags.

“It’s just unusual,” Kravetz said. “I’ve had whales wash up, sea lions, sharks … I have not seen goats wash up that have been placed in bags.  We are disturbed by these findings.”
