If you’re headed to the coast this weekend, be warned - it will be nuts out there.
With heat hitting in the triple digits, inlanders will be flocking to the beach to get some of that nice ocean breeze. Mix that in with a holiday weekend as people say goodbye to summer, and you’ll surely have some trouble getting a parking spot or fire pit.
But if you’re willing to deal with the mess, here’s some stuff you can do along the coast this weekend:
Boardfest:
Even if you’re not into action sports - or women- you might want to come down to Huntington on Sunday and Monday morning just to see one of the oddest things along the coast since the cow drive in July.
Boardfest - now in its fourth year - will be blowing from the pier about 40 tons of snow onto a huge, man-made snowboard ramp. And with this weekend’s expected heat wave, we should get a bet going on how fast all that fluff will melt.
Boardfest is an annual event put on for the girls (fellas, you can come watch) Saturday through Monday. The major draw are the competitions - surf, skate and snow all taking place on the south side of the pier. There’s a full blown festival going on as well, with vendors, entertainment and other things to keep you busy such as a rock-climbing wall and mechanical surfboard.
The event will draw some of the best women competitors around, surfers such as Newport’s Erica Hosseini, and Santa Ana’s Courtney Conlogue - who this year made history at age 14 as the youngest to compete in the semi-finals at the U.S. Open of Surfing.
There’s also clinics for those who want to learn to ride, or who want to improve their skills. To sign up for one, click here or show up the day of.
An estimated 100,000 people are expected.for the event.
Booze and the beach:
Oh, my two favorite things.
The “Barefoot Wine and Beach Rescue Project” will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The day starts off with a beach clean-up at Trestles (meet at the parking lot at Christianitos Road and El Camino Real).
After the clean-up, and starting at 8 p.m., there will be a “Barefoot Celebration” at the Rip Curl store in San Clemente with free wine, food and performances by Jill Cunniff of Luscious Jackson. Address is 3801 S. El Camino Real.

Check out Bolsa Chica Wetlands:
A tour of the wetlands is held every first Saturday of the month. Meet at the ecological reserve’s south lot, across the street from the main entrance to Bolsa Chica State Beach.
Docents give tours every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Five areas of interest are covered: history, birds, endangered species, ecology and restoration.
The wetlands just celebrated one-year after it opened, check out a story about it here.
Tours are stationed on the footbridge, and are first-come first-served. And it’s free!
