Huntington Beach — Adam Wickwire finally got his first victory. Even if it felt like a stealth performance.
The young Floridian surfed most of Sunday under the radar before getting an easy 14.57-10.70 victory in the Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure Junior Pro final over Hawaii’s Granger Larsen. Wesley Larsen and Cory Arrambide finished third and fourth, respectively.
It was great turnabout for Wickwire who had been finishing second all day to Granger Larsen, and a chance to steal the thunder of the Larsen brothers, who had eliminated Florida’s Geiselman brothers (Evan and Eric) in the semis.
Wickwire got off to a strong start with a 6.67 in chest high, if messy conditions, and scored a 7.17 a few minutes later to virtually lock it up.
“I wasn’t worried about (current hot surfer Arrambide) at all. I was just telling myself ‘don’t worry and be patient.’ It just matters what you do when you get up.”
The victory also pushed Wickwire to the top of ASP North America’s junior ratings. Arrambide is second and Eric Geiselman third. Orange County’s Chris Waring and Jason Harris are fifth and 12th, respectively.
