Fines too high in Newport

cops in west newport crack downOur weekly poll last week posed this question to viewers: Are fines in West Newport’s “Safety Enhancement Zone” on the Fourth of July too extreme?

The police five years ago tripled fines in a select area, where party people go nuts on the holiday. I did an on-scene blog last Wednesday for viewers to get a glimpse of the madness. Read it here.

And if you have a few moments, check out this killer video Greg Magnus pulled together of the madness. Be warned, there’s Speedo action.

Fifty three votes were cast, coming in as 72 percent “yes,” and 28 percent “no.” For the record, this is the first week the site has been up, so I clicked on the vote several times just to see if it was working.

Police arrested more people this year than in 2006 — 118 people were taken away to the slammer, most in trouble for being drunk in public.
