It’s a tough job…

Someone has to cover the beach, right? Welcome to our new beach Web site — a way for us to connect you to the coast.
A few years back the Register started its Outdoor section on the back page of Sports, where surfing reporter Shawn Price and I (Laylan Connelly) have written articles about all the happenings along the Orange County coast.
Shawn has covered everything from the retirement annoucement of volleyball legend Karch Kiraly, to a profile on pro surfer Sunny Garcia as he gets back into the circuit fresh out of the slammer.
And I’ve had the pleasure of writing about some pretty amazing stuff out there. I’ve covered everything from a Newport Beach dodgeball tournament where a guy showed up in a Speedo (see video below), tandem surfers as they show off with style, and the massive blue whales that seem to have found a home here in OC.
But one thing we’re both constantly griping about is the lack of space in print. There’s just too much going on for us to squeeze everything into the paper. This Web site will also allow us to get info out right away, so you know about what’s going on as soon as we do.
You’ll also notice this site is filled with info from Surfine.com, the foremost experts when it comes to forecasting. We’ll be working closely with the Huntington Beach-based company so you can see up-to-date conditions, as well as three-day video forecasts for surfing and boating that Surfline.com is creating just for this site
We hope this will become a spot for all beach lovers to enjoy. One thing we’ve learned — those who love the beach are passionate about it. Surfers care deeply about water quality, boaters and sailors keep up with the latest on their sports, and folks who travel to coastal O.C. want to know everything about the beaches. Yahoo recently listed the top 20 beaches people search for on the web. Laguna, Newport and Huntington beaches all made the cut.
This isn’t just us telling you what’s up out there — we want to hear from you. Shoot us an e-mail any time with tips. We’ll also have guest community bloggers with different areas of expertise, such as a lifeguard from Laguna who will tell us about the latest happenings straight from the tower. You’ll also find regular articles and “ask the expert” columns from surfing icon Corky Carroll, five-time U.S. Surfing Champion.
Check back Monday for a guide for all the coastal cities on the Forth of July. If you’re looking for a good firework show, or tips for how to nab a parking spot or fire ring, you won’t want to miss it.
So enjoy, and feel free to give us feedback. If anything, this page will take you away from the office during the week and take you straight to the beach.
Take it easy
